The Home Office figures published yesterday show that 70 people died in the 12 months to March 2002 while in custody or following contact with the police. This is 17 deaths more than the previous year - a rise of 32%. The number of people who have died in car and motorbike crashes while trying to evade the police has risen in the last year from 17 to 31, according to figures published yesterday.
