Michelson / Morley Experiment ----------------------------- Even today some `text-book' physicists claim that the Michelson / Morley Experiment "proved" something or other. It could not prove anything at that time. The experiment tried to find out if "electro-magnetic" (and maybe nuclear) forces were enabled by an ether (aether) permeating the Universe. They compared speed-of-travel of light-beams to decide this. mirror C ______ | b | | / | LIGHT -a - / - c - |mirror E / | | | x| |y ----- | | comparator So a light-beam was sent to a "splitter" / which let 1/2 beam pass thru to mirror E while 1/2 beam reflected left to mirror C. [Both mirrors were equal distance] The return beams (x & y) should be in-phase and produce a "zero-beat" output at COMPARATOR. If either beam was "faster" (earlier) or "slower" (later) than the other then an "output", actually an `interference pattern', would show at COMPARATOR The apparatus was then turned so that line "a - E" was aligned with Equator and experiment was switched "ON" [ The thinking was: the Earth turns East about 1000 mph (at Equator) so if there is an "aether / ether" enabling emr (light), then the light-beam "c" would be slower (because traveling "upstream") than beam "b" ] background at http://www.perceptions.couk.com/uef/twoslit.txt ------------------------- Flaws of "theory" behind the Michelson / Morley Experiment:- By conventional theory Athough light-beam "c" _would_ theoretically be a tiny bit slower (but not measurably, even by today's `science'), a "relativity" effect would shrink the distance "a - E" by exactly the same proportion. Result = ZERO [ Lorentz, (and Fitzgerald independently) realized this. Perhaps it led him to develop his own `Relativity' theorem. ] -- No-one suspected the huge radial `speed' of the UEF field which gives the effects of an `ether'. Emr - electromagnetic effects (like nuclear "forces") are secondary effects of UEF; and therefore its presence is non-observable by present science - highly sensitive measurements which are needed aren't yet feasible. An experiment that can disprove "Principle of Galilean Relativity" (which claims `if you're in a closed spaceship you can't tell, by any on-board experiment, if you're moving or not') - is one measuring a _direct_ effect. The _directly observable_ effect of UEF is an `inertial' effect. Sensitivity to effect is increased for masses with greater angular momentum - so a gyroscope or a pendulum (or the Earth itself) always "knows" its position w.r.t. nearby masses and to the "fixed stars" And that inertial `information' is transmitted instantaneously - directly. If it were not, the Earth would've been flung off into space billions of years ago. ------------------------- I.e. first order: inertial effect - "instantaneous" & "non-local" - careful, a gravitational "field" might seem to belong here but it is a `shadow' in the inertial effect. second order: electromagnetic ( ~ as "independently constant: c") "limited" see also http://www.perceptions.couk.com/uef/mass.html & http://www.metaresearch.org/cosmology/speed_of_gravity.asp ---------------------------------------------------- FURTHER REFERENCES GO - "search perceptions" - in SEARCH-ENGINE file-ID www.perceptions.couk.com/uef/experiment.txt
