In the past

and coming forward to the present

there have been and are still constant attacks on trees by

the conspicuously greedy and acquisitive: - emperors, caesars, kings and presidents.

For trees are always seen either as impediments or an instant resource - for war or profit.

From earliest times - when trees were killed to provide forts and fuel for dominating armies in wars of acquisition -

the guilty rulers, emperors, caesars, kings and presidents, eventually died out - becoming extinct, not only as individuals but also as family lines.

In the absence of other evidence

you could say:

trees exact retribution.
