Agency backtracks over GM rice contamination The Food Standards Agency yesterday changed its advice to the food industry on American long-grain rice which has been found to be contaminated with a GM variety not tested fit for human consumption. Following a threat of legal action by Friends of the Earth it is now advising food companies that "any rice known to be contaminated with GM material is illegal and should be removed from sale". Earlier, it told retailers it did not expect them to remove contaminated rice from their shelves. The environment group yesterday said the food safety body had acted "disgracefully".
