When Jason McGowan was found hanging from roadside railings in Telford on New Year's Day, 2000, it took a senior detective 23 minutes to decide that he had taken his own life. The decision was made with curious speed: six months earlier, the man's uncle had died in similar circumstances after being subjected to a sustained and vicious racist campaign. Yesterday, after three years and two traumatic inquests, the family's campaign to discredit police assertions that a newly married man aged 20 had killed himself was vindicated by an open verdict from an inquest jury.
