PORTUGAL: 10 CHARGED IN PEDOPHILE INQUIRY
  Prosecutors brought formal pedophile charges against 10 people,
  including an opposition lawmaker, two popular television
  personalities and a former ambassador.

  The case, which alleges that more than 100 children at state-run
  homes for orphans and the underprivileged were raped or otherwise
  molested, has gripped the nation for more than a year.

  Portugal child sex charges issued

  Portuguese prosecutors have charged 10 people with the sexual abuse
  of children in state-run homes. 

  The former employment minister Paulo Pedroso, and former ambassador
  to South Africa Jorge Ritto are among them. 

  The case has outraged Portugal and shaken public trust in the
  authorities. President Jorge Sampaio has described it as a "national
  disgrace". 

  Attorney General Jose Souto Moura said the 10 were indicted on
  charges of sexually abusing minors, rape and organising a paedophile
  ring. 

  Mr Moura did not release the names but they also include television
  presenters Carlos Cruz and Herman Jose - both of whom have been in
  custody for several months.
