Hello List, here's a 45 min chat between so-called `experts' (am listening now). If it's available at your location, there's "over a year left to listen"
Interestingly, the preamble included the possibility that aliens are already among us, just undetected. [Think the Vatican's last think-tank also considered that, but can't recall any specific odds being given.]
Aliens: The Ultimate Them and Us
Duration: 45 minutes
First broadcast: Wednesday 21 November 2012
Matthew Sweet debates how the discovery of alien life might change the way we think about humanity.
Scientists have now detected distant planets that may contain life. If we are not alone in the Universe, will this fundamentally affect how we understand ourselves and should we prepare for the consequences? Ought we to begin work on a set of truly "universal" rights or prepare to take arms against the greatest threat to our existence?
Debating how the discovery of alien life will impact our moral and philosophical universe are the best-selling science-fiction writer Stephen Baxter, whose books include the latest Doctor Who novel, the science broadcaster and journalist Sue Nelson, the futurist and neuroscientist Anders Sandberg, and one of our leading space scientists, John Zarnecki, Professor of Space Science at the Open University.
The event is chaired by Night Waves presenter Matthew Sweet and recorded as part of Radio 3's Free Thinking Festival 2012.

Ha! A quick search shows that Jasper Copping has also written a number of articles _confirming_ the existence of UFOs and their sightings by well qualified witnesses.
Maybe see http://tinyurl.com/c8nz979 "The UFO sighting that convinced a Government minister", and follow the links to "related articles".
So it seems that Copping is merely a somewhat typical UK media-hack, willing to write whatever he's told - regardless of the facts.
That sort of hubris and denial is also responsible for the corrupt mess that is UK's media (inc. BBC), policing, judiciary, fiscal system, bureaucracy and, over-archingly, UK's parliament.
After a little observation a logical analyst learns to discount almost all `information' from those sources and instead to look for concealed motives and activities.

>> Wrong! IMHO If, as expected, interspecies civilizations are forced to value literal truth and abandon fiction / lies/deceptions of all kinds in order to prevent lethal interspecies misunderstandings - then the people most affected on Earth will be those presently holding most power. That is, the politicians, lawyers, priests, corporate advertizers etc, whose trades depend on fictions of all kinds.

Good story. However I should make it clear that 'non-fiction interspecies civilization' was an expectation arived at by some long-term evolutionary analysis - using the 'real evolution' of Wallace, not Darwin.
As you probably know there's always at least three credible evolutionary forecasts - short, medium and long-term. I.e you can attain short-term 'success' by going carnivorous and gaining in size and speed, but predators tend to go extinct at every 'horizon' (drastic change in conditions as seen by archeology) while their prey usually survive and adapt, so adaptability and intelligence are called for in the medium term.
What the long-term demands is a matter for conjecture but if it involves getting along with more advanced - and technically powerful - beings of (probably) entirely different evolutionary backgrounds then it seems that tolerance, tact and complete sincerity will be necessary. I.e. we wouldn't be well placed if caught out in deception - even once.
So evolutionary theory tells us that humans like our present politicos, media, lawyers etc will die out - or else they'll get us all killed.
BTW - have read a few attempts at this, mostly unconvincing:
As an exercise try to imagine a conference between a carnivore, a herbivore, a hive-entity, a vegetable being and a plasma intelligence. See any common ground there?

First Ever Etruscan Pyramids Found in Italy
Rossella Lorenzi, Discovery NewsDate: 19 September 2012 Time: 10:22
The first ever Etruscan pyramids have been located underneath a wine cellar in the city of Orvieto in central Italy, according to a team of U.S. and Italian archaeologists.
Carved into the rock of the tufa plateau --a sedimentary area that is a result of volcanic activity -- on which the city stands, the subterranean structures were largely filled. Only the top-most modern layer was visible.
"Within this upper section, which had been modified in modern times and was used as a wine cellar, we noticed a series of ancient stairs carved into the wall. They were clearly of Etruscan construction," David B. George of the Department of Classics at Saint Anselm, told Discovery News.
As they started digging, George and co-director of the excavation Claudio Bizzarri of the Parco Archeologico Ambientale dell'Orvietano noted that the cave's walls were tapered up in a pyramidal fashion. Intriguingly, a series of tunnels, again of Etruscan construction, ran underneath the wine cellar hinting to the possibility of deeper undiscovered structures below.
After going through a mid-20th century floor, George and Bizzarri reached a medieval floor. Immediately beneath this floor, they found a layer of fill that contained various artifacts such as Attic red figure pottery from the middle of the 5th Century B.C., 6th and 5th century B.C. Etruscan pottery with inscriptions as well as various objects that dated to before 1000 B.C.
Digging through this layer, the archaeologists found 5 feet of gray sterile fill, which was intentionally deposited from a hole in the top of the structure.
"Below that material there was a brown layer that we are currently excavating. Intriguingly, the stone carved stairs run down the wall as we continue digging. We still don't know where they are going to take us," Bizzarri told Discovery News.
The material from the deepest level reached so far (the archaeologists have pushed down about 10 feet) dates to around the middle of the fifth century B.C.
"At this level we found a tunnel running to another pyramidal structure and dating from before the 5th century B.C. which adds to the mystery," George said.
Indeed, the Etruscans have long been considered one of antiquity's greatest enigmas.
A fun-loving and eclectic people who among other things taught the French how to make wine, the Romans how to build roads, and introduced the art of writing to Europe, the Etruscans began to flourish in Etruria (an area in central Italy area that covered now are Tuscany, Latium, Emilia-Romagna and Umbria) around 900 B.C., and then dominated much of the country for five centuries.
Known for their art, agriculture, fine metalworking and commerce, they started to decline during the fifth century B.C., as the Romans grew in power. By 300-100 B.C., they eventually became absorbed into the Roman empire.
Their puzzling, non-Indo-European language was virtually extinguished and they left no literature to document their society. Indeed, much of what we know about them comes from their cemeteries: only the richly decorated tombs they left behind have provided clues to fully reconstruct their history.
The subterranean pyramids in Orvieto could offer a unique insight into this civilization as the structures appear to be unique.
"The caves have indeed a shape unknown elsewhere in Etruria," Larissa Bonfante, professor emerita of classics at New York University and a leading expert on the ancient Etruscans, told Discovery News.
According to Bizzarri, there are at least five Etruscan pyramids under the city. Three of these structures have yet to be excavated.
"Clearly, they are not quarries or cisterns. I would say that there is nothing like these structures on record anywhere in Italy," Bizzarri said.
According to George, the underground pyramids could represent some sort of a religious structure or a tomb. In both cases, it would be a discovery without precedent.
"Most likely, the answer waits at the bottom. The problem is we don't really know how much we have to dig to get down there," Bizzarri said.

Subject: Real Conspiracies?
Idly reviewing social trends last night, suddenly realised that some data had accumulated without anyone joining up the dots.
The UK has quickly become intensely camera-surveilled, with coverage of urban pedestrian and traffic areas, and ingress and egress to towns and cities, and intense work going into completing (seemingly redundant) coverage of the thousands of miles of trunk roads and motorways spanning the hinterland between urban areas.
Is that all to catch criminals? Hardly likely.
most thugs, murderers and rapists are in the Police / Security, most big embezzlers run banks and City of London finance houses, most dangerous pedophiles are priests, bishops, judges + magistrates, and most other fraudsters and thieves [+ pedos] are in Parliament, Whitehall, the BBC or the Press. [That's `per capita' and maybe even numerically]
So what are they watching for?
Some suggestions (clues are in brackets):
- something easily recognizable (cameras are low-quality);
- something fast-moving (overlapping coverage);
- something liable to appear (materialize?) on any lighted, paved / metalled area, and to quickly move along it (that hinterland coverage).
Any other clues? No - not in UK, gov't secrecy is generally too tight.
However, some websites, notably George Ure's `Urban Survival' have been clocking up huge amounts of ammo being hurriedly purchased by US Govt depts - up to the billions of rounds (at that time), some of it armour-piercing stuff. Weirdly, the Dept of Social Security wanted 174,000 hollow-point bullets. As George comments - "That pencils out to 589 rounds per agent. Hmmm".
The UK Gov't _could_ be doing exactly the same thing, because there's little or no public oversight here in UK.
Both the types and the calibres seem a bit much for self-protection or even law-enforcement. So what are they expecting? And when?
Gregory ***** wrote:
> Ray, what's your guess on why they are surveying and buying ammo?
Hi Greg, that's all a bit vague just now - although we know that the UK's camera-install started maybe a decade or more ago and has been speeding up more recently. But from George Ure's informants the US gov't's rush ammo-buying only started well into this year.
So our speculations have to depend on how much advance notice (or recent provocation) we think the PTB has arranged, and who or what is going to be called "the enemy".
Either way there's maybe several scenarios - we'll just have to wait and see.

The book is substantial - all told, it runs to about 560 pages, and it contains 14 outline maps. I believe that it's well-researched and clearly written. It's extensively referenced, and should be of interest to UFO researchers, psychical researchers, and general readers.
The following is a list of the contents:
1 Setting the Scene

Chapters 1-5 are foundation chapters. They discuss, among other things, theories about UFO phenomena, apparitional events, and abduction experiences. Chapters 6-15 consider alleged hot spots in the UK. Chapter 16, which focuses on the mainland of the USA, is quite long. It discusses areas such as the Yakama Indian Reservation (Washington state), the San Luis Valley (Colorado/New Mexico), north-east Utah (the location of the so-called `Skinwalker Ranch'), the `Bridgewater Triangle' (Massachusetts), and the Hudson Valley.

In the summer of 2007, my family discovered that we had a ghost living with us in our house in Fort Collins, Colorado, USA.
I immediately launched an investigation and we soon learned to communicate with the spirit using telepathy.
The ghost responded to our requests to absorb energy in order to manifest in human form, to communicate by knocking, and to appear in photographs and on video.
I contacted the staff at the Fort Collins Museum and they helped me research the land on which our house was built. We determined that our ghost was Mary Bell Wilson who died from typhoid fever in 1886.
Later, a local couple, Duane and Susan Kniebes, who used dowsing rods to locate pioneer graves on behalf of the State of Colorado, came out to our house. They confirmed the presence of a grave site in our back yard. The Kniebes instructed us how to communicate with Mary Bell using the dowsing rods and left us two pair.
Using the dowsing rods, I was able to communicate with Mary Bell every day and ask her many questions about dying, and the after life.
During my investigation, I captured many interesting photographs and videos of our ghost. I have put some of these on a video that can be viewed at:

Subject: Those `strange sounds in the sky' - a giant capacitor
Early to bed last night, and opened the `sleep book' where it's been stuck for a few days (p. 383 where Penrose asks `Where do we go from here' re: QM), and realized I was too pre-occupied to concentrate on his arguments. I was still wondering if there was enough information to analyze those "strange sounds in the sky".
Lying there reviewing the recordings something jumped out at me. Although it was only seen in a couple or three cases, towards the end there's a flash of `sky-light' (definitely *not* lightning) and the strange sounds cease immediately!
Earlier yesterday had gone back to electrics, electronics, radio and satellite training and experience to rebuff any suggestion that the sounds could be received natural "radio signals" of any kind (no feasible antenna or demodulator could carry that load), but suddenly that `flash of light' made me think of capacitive discharge - in the sky!
A capacitor (condenser) is basically two plates of conducting material separated by a thin layer of insulating material (a dielelectric) and it can serve as a block to some electrical frequencies while allowing other frequencies to pass through, although no current flows through the device - only specific AC voltages pass to the second plate.
But initially, at "switch-on", the capacitor is a perfect block - it won't pass any signal until it has `charged up' by getting a sufficient voltage at the i/p plate.
That idea suddenly made sense - if a conducting layer of some kind formed `in the sky', say above or below the roof of the troposphere (weather layer), then the earth (or rather the water-table or a conducting geological stratum) could act as the second plate and we then have a capacitor capable, if `charged-up', of passing certain freqencies in either direction.
And here's where the QM comes in (actually the two-slit experiment): `interference patterns' (as in waves) can make the `power' build up in certain areas while leaving other close-by areas `empty' or quiet (as in the two-slit experiment).
The actual content of any noises passed through will depend on the voltage changes on the `i/p plate', and could be an analog of the Sun's heart-beat, or even a wider cosmic pulse.
Some obvious questions:
1) what is forming the top layer (plate)? And why now? (possibly starting in 2008 or 2009 in USA). It could be man-made, but I remember a forecast some ten or more years? ago, that the solar system would soon hit a `wall of dust'. Could this be a side-effect?
2) are the frequencies we're hearing limited to those that resonate in human bodies, skulls etc?
3) only relatively small geographical areas seem to be affected at any one time. Is this due to `patchiness' of the top layer or to isolated water-table or strata conditions forming the bottom layer?
I'm sure you will think of more.

This short note is about harmonics analysis:-
Any complex `sound' is a sum of `pure tones', plus a few or many harmonics (multiples) of those tones.
Musical effects come from the harmonics in a sound: a simple brass trumpet or bugle makes "odd harmonics" - 3 times, 5 times, 7 times, etc. which is why the (overall) output waveform has a pointed, dagger-like shape, matching the penetrating "metallic" tone of the instrument.
"Even harmonics" - 2 times, 4 times, 8 times, etc. can be produced by several types of `forcing' or `distortion' and, if extended will tend towards a `square wave' output, making a totally different sound (maybe more "wooden"?).
To achieve pleasant musical effects, all instruments are shaped, adapted and fitted with `extras' to give their distinctive combinations of harmonics. Only a synthesizer can produce a single `pure tone' - and it's rather boring.
By a process called `harmonic analysis' - used in music technology, mathematics and even quantum mechanics - you can obtain the `fingerprint' of a particular sound, allowing you to make some informed guesses, not only about its original source but also any secondary processing it may have gone through.
You can do it (very roughly) at home on your PC or Mac by putting the sound through any audio app. which shows the output waveshape on a screen; each w/shape will have a distinctive `fingerprint' of distribution of harmonics - even though `noise' or other sounds might be overlaid on the original. - Ray

Strange Sounds In The Sky All Around The World
Do you have an explanation for all of the strange sounds in the sky that have been documented all around the world lately? 0ver the past few weeks, Twitter, Facebook and the blogosphere have been absolutely buzzing about these strange sounds.
At the moment, they remain a great mystery because nobody can seem to explain them. Some are calling them "apocalyptic sounds". Whatever they are, they are very loud. Those that have heard the unexplained sounds in the sky compare them to the rumbling of a train, a sonic boom or a trumpet. In this article, we will discuss some of the most popular theories about these sounds, but the truth is that right now nobody really knows what is going on.
But what we can say is that this is truly a global phenomenon. Strange sounds in the sky are being recorded literally all over the world and are being uploaded to YouTube at a very rapid pace. If someone was trying to fake this, it would be quite difficult to get people all over the planet to cooperate. In some instances, entire communities have heard these sounds. So it appears as though something is definitely happening. Perhaps there is a very basic explanation for all of this. Perhaps there is not. In any event, the fact that we simply do not know what is going on is rather unsettling. ...

Yes - although the Tibetan sound was much smoother and more `musical' there was something about the deepness and echo-y weirdness which pulled that memory up.
PS - climbed in that mountain range many times, esp. in the winter (usually alone if staying up there for some days), and never heard those noises before or since, only that night.
