Campaign to stamp out racism in the CPS The Director of Public Prosecutions and his entire staff are to be assessed for racial prejudice in a campaign to stamp out such practice in the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). The move follows a damning report by an independent investigator and continued monitoring of the CPS by the Commission for Racial Equality. An interim report published by Sylvia Denman concluded that there was a real problem with race discrimination at the CPS. The report's findings followed a series of successful race discrimination cases taken against the CPS, and a decision by the commission to launch its own investigation into the treatment of CPS staff. David Calvert-Smith QC, the head of the CPS and the country's most senior prosecutor, will attend a two-day training course in March at which he and colleagues will be asked to respond to a set of racist scenarios played out by actors. Rohan Collier, the head of equality and diversity at the CPS, said the principal aim behind the initiative was to end racial and other forms of discrimination in the organisation. She said the training was part of the service's response to the inquiry into the murder of Stephen Lawrence, adding that it was needed because the "subtly of institutional racism" was much harder to understand than overt racism. "I'm not sure they [the CPS] have really been concerned about what the community has got to say about race, so there needs to be a cultural change," she said. All CPS staff, including Mr Calvert-Smith, would have to attend either a one-day or two-day course, depending on seniority. The first sessions began this month but training will not be completed until summer 2002. In her report Ms Denman said "barriers to recruitment of ethnic minority staff operate in some CPS areas".
