Subject: Anger over Potters Bar crash ruling Date: Mon, 17 Oct 2005 17:44:01 +0100 From: Ray Dickenson > http://news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=2102982005 > 5:02pm (UK) Anger over Potters Bar crash ruling > Families bereaved by the Potters Bar rail crash have reacted with anger to news that no criminal charges will be brought over the derailment which claimed seven lives. > > The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) made the ruling about the May 2002 accident after deciding the evidence did "not provide a realistic prospect of conviction for an offence of gross negligence manslaughter against any individual or corporation." > > But Network Rail, as well as Jarvis - the company doing the maintenance at Potters Bar - could still face charges under health and safety laws. > > Perdita Kark whose father Austen Kark, 75, died on the London to King's Lynn train at Potters Bar, said she was "angry and bitter" that no criminal charges were being brought. Rail union the RMT said justice had not been done and train drivers' union Aslef said the railways seemed "above the law". Judged by their past decisions - not by fine words in parliament or pompous speeches in the high court - the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) is corrupt.
