UK car prices highest in Europe British drivers still pay up to 60% more for cars than motorists on the continent, it was reported today. European commission (EC) research, set to be published later today, showed prices were highest in Britain for 52 of the 81 models surveyed, which included some cars assembled in the UK. A Fiat Marea on sale in Britain for £9,197 can be bought in Denmark for £5,583, the survey for an EC committee found. A Land Rover Discovery at £19,784 costs 27% more than elsewhere in Europe and a Rover MGF sports car at £14,311 comes in at 40% more expensive. The best buys for Britons were cars made by German manufacturers BMW, Audi and Mercedes, where prices here were as little as 2% higher than on the continent, the research showed. The EC survey comes a year after a competition commission report confirmed UK customers were paying far more for new models than purchasers in the rest of Europe.
