Australia 'regrets' suffering of migrants Canberra announces reparations for British children transported under postwar policy to send 'good white stock' abroad Thousands of people who were physically and sexually abused after being sent to Australia as child migrants won some recognition of their mistreatment yesterday when the Australian government expressed its regret for their "injustice and suffering." During the migration scheme - described by a House of Commons select committee as "Britain's shameful secret" - children as young as three were sent to Australia from 1946 to the early 1970s in the misplaced belief they would have a better life than in cash-strapped British care homes. While Australia may have believed it was doing its duty by helping British orphans, many of the children were not orphaned and were sent without their parents' knowledge. A more sinister motive was also at play, with specialist agencies such as the Fairbridge Society being established to populate the empire with "good white British stock". Once in Australia, many remained in institutions where they were raped, whipped, stripped of their names and some forced to do hard labour.
