why do we love those

fashions, fads and romantic fancies ?

We are told by dry and fusty experts that fashions are 'frivolous' - that our human fancy for the new and exciting is 'meaningless'.

Not so!

We like new things for a good reason. And it's the same reason that makes us different from all our animal cousins, even those closest to us.

More primitive life-forms don't get bored with eating and sleeping. But humans demand more from life than mere consumption.

We want - and need - interest !

There are good reasons why that need - let's call it curiosity - is a great survival tactic: curiosity forces us to learn new tactics, concepts and attitudes.

That continual learning.- let's call it adaptability - is what defines human beings.

So let's be philosophical about new pop-songs, art, clothes-styles, and street-language.

If we didn't want them - we could still be living in trees.
