"Girls are much quicker than boys at learning how to speak" Girls are quicker at learning to speak than boys, a study released yesterday shows. Dr Galsworthy, who presented the findings of his work at the first day of the International Conference of Infant Studies in Brighton, East Sussex, said he and his colleagues used more than 2,000 same-sex and opposite-sex twins to explore gender differences in cognitive ability between the ages of two an four. He said: "Using twin studies allows researchers to gauge the amount of genetic influence on any given trait." Identical and non-identical twins, including non-identical opposite-sex twins, were used to see how genetics affected both verbal and non-verbal learning. Dr Galsworthy said: "The findings show that as early as two years old, girls out-perform boys on cognitive scores, particularly in verbal ability. As the twins get older, through years three and four, this difference in verbal ability becomes smaller."
