"Doctor jailed for string of indecent assaults" By Kate Watson-Smyth 21 December 2000 A family doctor [Clifford Ayling] who was allowed to carry on working for two years between his arrest and eventual trial was jailed for four years yesterday after he was convicted of indecently assaulting 10 female patients. Ayling, who denied the charges, was arrested in November 1998 but was allowed to continue working at his practice in Cheriton, near Folkestone, Kent, for the next two years after he overturned a magistrates' bail condition preventing him from doing so. After appealing to the High Court he was allowed to continue on the condition he was chaperoned by a female nurse. The jury deliberated for nearly five days before finding Ayling guilty on 13 counts of indecent assault between 1991 and 1998. Not guilty verdicts were returned on five counts involving another three women. A further 11 counts of indecent assault against eight victims were allowed to lie on the file. The court was told that Ayling had been given a number of warnings before he was charged. He was arrested after one complaint in 1991, but the case against him was too weak to pursue. There were five more complaints before he was charged in 1998. Ayling also posed as the disgraced consultant Rodney Ledward, who died last month and who was struck off [only] after maiming scores of women. He worked for Ledward as a clinical assistant between 1984 and 1994 at the William Harvey Hospital at Ashford, Kent.
