On the face of it, with all other things being equal, a `need' for (actual) longer detention-without-charge than other countries,

In either case, something the English parliament shouldn't be boasting about.

Date: Wed, 5 Dec 2007 08:08:42 -0800 (PST) Subject: This Holiday Season, Support Meaningful Projects

This holiday season, there are all kinds of expensive gadgets and gizmos that you can give to family and friends. But it only takes $42 to provide a student in Uganda with a nutritious lunch for an entire year.

This season, pledge to support projects that need it the most:

Children who are orphaned due to AIDS are cut off from critical access to healthcare, education and basic necessities. But students in a school in Nyakagyezi, Uganda who have been orphaned due to HIV/AIDS receive free education, which is funded completely by donations from people like you.

For these children there is hope, because of people like you who can provide help to those who need it most. This holiday season, pledge to give to meaningful projects around the world:

Make this holiday season a time for giving, in the deepest sense. Share how you will make the season brighter for those in need.

Thank you for making a difference.

Right, havent checked `business rates' (local UK business taxation) till now, here's -

RE: Improve Standards of Animal Welfare in European Laboratories

The European Commission is currently reviewing Directive 86/609/EEC, which sets out the rules for animal experimentation across the whole of Europe.  There is still time to make a difference to the final draft.

A new European Chemical Testing Policy called REACH proposes to Test 30,000 Chemicals of every kind - from those used in industrial processes to the ingredients of consumer products - on Millions of animals from mice to fish to dogs, causing untold suffering.  This Directive should help these animals while still improving standards.

The European Commission itself acknowledges that non-animal replacements " ... have the potential to provide robust information through quality-controlled, state-of-the-art tests which are faster and less cost-intensive than classical animal-based tests".

It has launched a Community Action Plan for the Protection and Welfare of Animals.  This explicitly states  "The final aim is to replace animal experiments with methods not entailing the use of an animal".

It is in all our interest that Animal Testing is replaced with Alternatives based on Human Biology not Animals.

For evidence that superior Alternative Research & Testing is replacing Animal Testing visit

Please sign "Replace all Animal Experiments in Europe"

Now political pressure is needed to encourage EU legislators to do everything they can to maximise non-animal replacement efforts.

Contact your MEPs and urge them to use the revision process of Directive 86/609/EEC as an opportunity to improve the Standards of Animal Welfare in European Laboratories and make replacing with Alternatives a priority.

For contact details of your MEPs visit

If you want to do more:-
Over 10,000 primates are used in experiments in Europe every year with the UK being Europe's largest single user followed by France and Germany.

Please write to the European Commission and ask them to ban primate tests.  To help, a prepared letter can be found at

Please tell your friends and colleagues to do the same.

Everyone can help and you can make a difference.

Date: Tue, 13 Nov 2007 12:44:51 -0800 (PST) Subject: Urge Pakistan to End State of Emergency

Dear Ray,

Today, former premier and outspoken opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was put under house arrest to prevent her from leading a cross-country caravan to protest the military rule in Pakistan.

Sign this petition to call for her release:

Bhutto is urging the international community to stop backing President Musharraf -- who imposed emergency rule on November 3 -- and "to stop backing the man whose dictatorship threatens to engulf this nuclear-armed state in chaos." Nonetheless, President Musharraf vigorously defended the emergency rule, insisting that it would not interfere with free and fair elections.

We need to act now. In Pakistan, a prolonged state of emergency will pave the way for an increase in human rights abuses, torture and even more arbitrary detentions and disappearances.

Emergency powers are not above the law.Call on General Musharaff to put an end to the state of emergency and to restore constitutional rights:

Thanks for taking action,

There have been small pockets of creative individuals throughout history who have changed the face of civilization.

How, we might wonder - at a time when many of us feel the need to have more of a voice in what is happening to the earth and the creatures - can just a handful of creative people have such an impact?

These small groups are in fact part of a long tradition of artist/healers that are not usually powerful in the ordinary ways of wealth, industry or politics, but whose imaginative thoughts change our ideas and move our world.

If not for the people, for the universal knowing.

Dear Ray,

Yesterday, Myanmar's military junta continued a violent crackdown on its own people. Just a few hours after the departure of a U.N. envoy, soldiers went through homes looking for monks, and at least eight truckloads of prisoners were hauled out of Yangon, Burma's biggest city.

We cannot let the violence go on.

We need to act now to protect monks, activists and innocent civilians from further abuses and to support them in their struggle for freedom:

Myanmar has an appalling human rights record. Thousands of political prisoners are detained in deteriorating prison conditions and the use of child soldiers, forced labor, and torture are common. The recent violence has shown the world the extent of Myanmar's brutal crimes. Urge the United Nations to take urgent steps to get Myanmar's junta to stop the crackdown.

Sign this petition and stand with the people of Burma:

Thank you for speaking out on their behalf.

Dear Friend,

The Campaign is running a half-day FOI course on 'Information Commissioner & Tribunal Decisions' in London on 1 November 2007, Liverpool on 6 November and Bristol on 8 November 2007.

The course is aimed at those with a good working knowledge of the legislation.  It will look at the implications of key decisions from recent months on the main exemptions, public interest test and procedural requirements.  It will examine the approach being taken by the Commissioner and Tribunal in part by discussing apparently similar cases which have reached different outcomes.

Your work is groundbreaking and will help change the world.

Do you know the meaning of the word Apocalypse?  it means to "remove the covers" or "reveal the truth".

take a look at my site some time

keep up the good work

Hi Matthew,
Thanks for that.  The modern usage of that `Apocalypse' word is interesting.  Why are we made to think that `a revealing' is something fearful?

Similarly our language bosses always use `anarchy' as a synonym for `chaos' - but that's not true.  Anarchy simply means `self-rule' - a life free from hierarchy.

I.e. living like the Cathars did, and very successfully, until they were slaughtered by the `establishment'.

Seems the language bosses always try to imply that `freedom' words are `bad'.

BTW - Really like your site, more than just interesting - it's quite inspiring.

Best regards

Date: Thu, 6 Sep 2007 11:12:11 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Animals Matter! Support the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare

Hi Ray,

Animals give us so much - loyal companionship, productivity in work situations and insights into the beauty and mystery of nature. That's why it's so hard to fathom how animal cruelty could be so shockingly prevalent - both in the U.S. and the rest of the world.

Support a world where animal welfare matters, and animal cruelty ends >>

All animals should be free to live their lives free from misery. But they struggle in a world that is often indifferent.

The illegal and inhumane trade in wildlife and wildlife parts is a soaring black market worth $10 billion a year. An estimated 80 percent of the world's cats and dogs are unwanted and suffer from hunger, disease, neglect and persecution as pests. And, though seldom considered, animals are also affected to an enormous degree by disasters, both natural and human-caused.

A global problem requires a global solution. Take Action!

The road toward better animal welfare is through cooperation, information and a strong international commitment.

Urge the United Nations to adopt a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare >>

A Universal Declaration by the UN would:
- Recognize animals as sentient beings, capable of suffering and experiencing pain.
- Recognize that animal welfare is an issue of importance as a part of the social development of nations.
- Act as a catalyst for better animal welfare provisions worldwide.

The declaration would have a real, long-term impact on the welfare of billions of animals worldwide! Your signature will be one more toward the goal of 10 million signatures on the "Animals Matter to Me" petition. Sign now!

Thank you for taking part in the most ambitious global initiative on animal welfare that has ever been attempted!

To: All European Citizens Who Care

This is a critical time. The European Commission (EC) is currently revising the law - known as Directive 86/609 - that governs animal experiments across Europe.

86/609 is a hugely powerful Directive that has power of life and death over millions of animals across the continent - setting out minimum standards for how and whether animals can be used in experiments.

A staggering ten million animals are used in outdated and wasteful experiments in European laboratories every year. The Directive is supposed to ensure "the protection of animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes" but the huge numbers show that it's just not doing that.

There is a real possibility that with enough support the EC will ban all primate tests as part of the revised law.

Written Declaration 40/2007 urges the European Parliament to use the revision process of Directive 86/609/EC as an opportunity to establish a timetable for replacing the use of all primates in scientific experiments with alternatives.

If you care about animals visit the following website to urge them to sign Written Declaration 40/2007.

This is Urgent. The Declaration will fall on 7th September and the signatures of half the MEPs in the Parliament is needed by then.

If you want to do more:-

Please write to the European Commission and ask them to ban primate tests. To help, a prepared letter can be found at

The address is:-
Mr. Stavros Dimas
Commissioner for Environment
European Commission

Please tell all your colleagues and friends in the UK and Europe about Written Declaration 40/2007.
